Tutorial - Colouring White

Hi everyone! Happy Friday to you all. It is Kylie here with a tutorial on colouring images to appear white.

Well, of course, we could just leave the image, after all, the cardstock was white - yes? But we want to add depth and shape so the image appears 3d. This is very easy to achieve using our grey Copics.

I have two examples for you today, the first using E's and W's and the second example using only W's. I have chosen the warm greys as they tend to be used on natural materials, such as clothing. Cool greys tend to be used on metals or man made materials. This is not to say that you can only use greys to colour white. On snow people, I tend to use my very pale blues B000 or B0000, but you can use any of the 000 or 0000 numbered Copics from any of the colour families, depending on the "hue" you wish your image to take on.

The first example is this Magnolia wedding couple image. I want Tilda's dress to appear ivory and Edwin's shirt to appear white. As they are standing together, it would look a little strange if their clothes merged in one colour, so I've chosen slightly different colours.

First of all, on Tilda's dress, I have used E50. This is a nice pale cream colour. I have very lightly outlined the edges of her dress, and the under sides of the pleats on the front of her dress

I have then lightly feathered this out with my E000 and to soften those edges, I 've used my blender 0 so there is no harsh edge to the colour.

As the cardstock is white and she is very pale, I want her to stand out from the page. To make something that you have coloured "white" stand out from your white background, you choose a corrosponding colour to outline it. This is a picture of the Copic colour wheel. You can see that I have circled the group of E colours in red and also the B group. These two groups are opposite each other and are contrasting. As I want my outline to be very subtle, I have chosen B0000.

And here you can see the finished image. You can see the very faint B0000 outline and the shape to Tilda's dress. I have also coloured Edwin's shirt using W1 and W0 in the same method.

I have also used W greys to colour this image of Mummy Edwin:

He was a little bit more work, with all of his bandages. I have coloured him with W3, 1 and 0.

Here you can see a bit more of the detail

I hope you found this tutorial easy to follow and I look forward to seeing some of your colouring on white items soon!

ATC Challenge and SWAP

Hi everyone! It is Kylie here with another ATC to share with you! Are you loving the ATCs we have been making to share with you? I am a sort of newbie to ATCs, only making my first about a month ago for a swap I was in, but I love them. I have loads of little images laying around that have been coloured but nothing to "sit" on yet, so ATCs are perfect to give your little people homes. And I love the idea of a swap. It is so much fun to receive a little piece of someone else's art work in the mail.

My ATC features a very new image called Lylah.
I have coloured Lylah with:
B 91, 93, 95,
E 11, 00, 000, 53, 55, 57,
R20.
So what are you waiting for? Get those little images out and make an ATC!

Colouring on something other than cardstock!

Hi, It is Kylie here with another shrink plastic idea for you, we really need to start checking with each other so we don't double up, lol.

Anyway, I've stamped my "Shrinky Dinks frosted rough and ready" shrink plastic with all five Lil Lolitas using Staz on ink on the shiny side of the Shrinky Dinks and coloured with my Copics on the frosted side. I've then run each image through the cuttlebug using oval Nestabilities and punched a little hole at the top of each oval... can you see where I am going with this?

Once shrunk, the Shrinky Dinks plastic becomes one third of its original size and 9 times thicker. So..... it makes PERFECT custom charms! When the shrink plastic is heated it begins to warp - a lot - and then as it shrinks to its final size it usually straightens out a bit. You can see on some of my "charms" that they didnt quite flatten properly and I had to reheat them a bit and use tweezers to hold them flat.

As the plastic becomes 9x thicker, it also gives a shaddow effect as the image is stamped on one side of the plastic and the colouring is on the other.

The colours also intensify quite a bit as they become more concentrated having been shrunk.

The frosting on the plastic gives a nice sparkly effect

Copics used:
E11, E55, W3, B21, R85, RV11, V13

The cute images are from the "Lil Lolita Collection" available at Tickled Pink Stamps.

Embellish your embellishments!

Hi everyone! It is Kylie here to share something interesting with you all!

Today I would like to show you how to embellish your embellishments with Copics. I wish I had known about this earlier, I have so much STUFF and in a rainbow of different colours, and had I known I could "Copic them" I would have one cupboard for my all white embellies and twice as many Copics!!

The list of things you can colour with Copics is endless. So long as they are not pre-dyed you can Copic them. If they are pre-dyed you may still be able to colour over the preexisting colour, but I would be hesitant as this existing colour may just melt with the alcohol in the marker and ruin the tip, so I stick to white, non-coloured items.

Below you can see a few different things laid out ready to customise - rhinestones, lace, ribbon, mulberry flowers, pearls.... the list is really endless. You can colour vellum, acetate and also shrink plastic! I have coloured white feathers before and that also worked quite well. It is best (as always) to have clean scratch paper under your work so you don't "wik" other colours onto your projects. And just like with different cardstocks, the colours show slightly differently on different surfaces.

I am using three different colours - RV 000, RV 21 and RV23

On these rhinestones I have used RV 23 so you can see the depth of colour you can achieve. Lighter colours work just as well, I just wanted to make sure you could see the result on the photos.

Next some nylon ribbon. I have used all three colours on this ribbon to get a bit more of a rainbow effect.

My favourite - flowers! See how you can use one marker to change a white flower into a pink one?

And you can use two markers to change it into a two tone flower. For this I first coloured the entire flower by touching the tip of RV000 to the flower I moved the marker around to soak the colour through the entire flower, then I used RV 21 and lightly touched it to the tips. If you find the colour too intense, just use your lighter colour again to dilute the intensity.

And now for the pearls! They give a nice result.

A silk hydrangea also works well. I coloured the edges with RV 23, then did another row of RV 21 just inside that line, and then coloured the rest of the flower with RV000

Mesh ribbon is the easiest of laces/ribbons to alter - you just lightly brush your marker tip across the ribbon and it takes the colour. There is no effort at all required for this one!

And now for my fully co-ordinated PINK mini easel card!

Feathered Blending with Kylie

Ohhhh....a very late Kylie is here! I just can't stand it when I am late! Especially when I am posting on here - my sincerest apologies!

Here is my creation for this week. The gorgeous Sammi has done a wonderful video tutorial so if you haven't feather blended before, everything you need to know is in one clever video. But we promise you - it is simple and the effect! WOW! Ever wanted to do that two tone thing so it blends into each other - then feathered blending is for you.

I have feathered the wings on this lovely Magnolia "Fairytale Tilda" with R81 and G 12. There is a close up pic below this main pic if you want to see the detail a little more clearly.

I have used Copics:
E11, 00, 000, 31
R 20, 81, 83, 85
G 12, 14
YR 20
Y 21 35
Spica - clear
So, you have now had a week of inspiration from the DT - so it is your turn!! There is another week left to enter this challenge so get out those stamps and markers and get colouring! We want to see what you can all do with your feathered blending!
And have a great weekend,
Kylie

Tutorial - Tip to Tip blending

Happy Friday everyone! Today is my day (Kylie) for a DT post for Mad for Markers. I have a more complete tutorial on Tip to Tip blending for you today.

Tip to Tip blending is used when you need to create a colour or shade when you don't have that particular colour. It is a good technique to learn when you are just starting out with Copics and don't have very many yet (although, let me warn you - once you have some, there is no going back, you will be addicted and will want many, many more). I just want to add that tip to tip blending will not harm your markers in any way! I promise.

Today I am going to show you how to use the technique on hair and clothing. Here is my little Magnolia Tilda image ready to be coloured. I have stamped her in Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto Xpress It blending card.

I am going to give her brunette hair. To do this I will use marker colours E57 and E53. Normally you would use both of these colours and also E55 as your mid tone but we will do it with just the E57 and E53.

First, I start by putting down some E57 colour (the darkest colour) in areas that would be the shadows - that would be around her face and any low points of her hair (clicking on the image will make it larger if you can't quite see the detail).

Once this is done, then I take my E53 and my E57 markers and touch their tips together. This transfers some of the darker ink onto my lighter marker. When I then put this to the cardstock, the darker colour will bleed off first, becoming lighter to the original colour. So touch your marker tip on the dark colour on your card that you have already laid down and draw it out towards where you would like the colour to be lightest. Continue to do this on all of the darker areas towards the lighter areas.

Here you can see a bit more clearly where I need to blend

If the colours don't look blended enough, go over them with the lighter marker until they fade

And here we have finished hair!

Next, her clothing. I always like to choose my papers before I chose marker colours so the clothing blends nicely with the rest of the project. For her dress and headband I have chosen B23, B21 and B60.

First I decide where the darker shadow and low points will be on her dress and lay some B23 (my darkest shade) down there first.

I have then blended this out with feather strokes with B21. This draws out the B23 colour a little more and the lighter edges of the colour blend a little more easily with the lighter colour. I have also coloured the underskirt of her dress with B23 and B21 as I had decided this part of her dress would be darker.

Next, I touch the tips of markers B21 and B60 together to transfer some darker colour (B21) to the lighter markers (B60).

Then starting at the darker part already coloured, I draw the colour towards the middle so the dark colour runs out and the lighter colour is on the more prominent areas of her dress.

I continue to do this around her dress, working from the darker areas towards where the light would lay (so, from 'seam' outwards, from top of should down, from pleats down). If you've added too much colour or want to blend a little more, you can use your 0 colourless blender on her dress where the light would hit it (down the centre).

And here she is completed! I haven't coloured the "lace" areas of her dress as I plan on adding glitter there on the finished card.

A little closer on the bottom of her dress

Copics used
Hair - E57, E53
Skin - E21, E00, E000, R20
Dress - B23, B21, B60
Flower - BG 13, BG10, B23, B21

Bazill White cardstock for card base, SU Kraft cardstock for matting, Magnolia Hoppy Easter patterned papers, Kaisercraft pearls, lace paper doily and ribbon.
